Much the same as Japan amazed its initial explorers such as Marco Polo, you will be taken aback by the 'Land of the Rising Sun'. Japan is called 'Nippon' in Japanese, which means 'sun-origin', and has lead to Japan often being referred to as the Land of the Rising Sun. The country is an archipelago made up of four large islands: Hokkaido, Honshu (The largest), Shikoku and Kyushu and a further 3000 or more small islands. Situated in the east of the Asian Continent, the country finds itself between the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Japan, and next to South Korea, China and Russia.
Spread over 378,000 km2 of land, Japan possess a mixture of the most advanced cultures in the Asian continent. In the 8th century, Marco Polo gave it the name of the 'Land of the golden roofs', easily understandable when you visit the country's temples and historic monuments.
